The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two semirigid prophylactic ankle stabilizers on vertical jump, ft sprint, shuttle run, and four-point run performance.

The authors compared effects of 3 ankle stabilizers, tape, lace-up (Swede-O Ankle Lok), and semirigid (Air-Cast Air-Stirrup) braces, and a nonsupport control on vertical jump (Sargent Jump Test.

Ankle braces in sports are used for prevention of ankle sprains. Besides restricting inversion and eversion, it is possible that an ankle brace also reduces the functional range of motion of the ankle joint. Consequently, their use could also impair athletic performance. It is unlikely that prophylactic ankle bracing will gain wide acceptance if bracing hinders athletic performance.

Ankle bracing is widely used by sports participants in order to prevent lateral ankle sprains. Current evidence on the various effects of ankle orthoses reveals that not only they are effective in minimizing the risk of injury, but also they do not hinder athletic performance and other parameters related to function.
